Variations

Halftap

Halftap Normal: the pen rotates in a counter-clockwise motion (right-handed performance) for 0.5 rotation on top of the thumb and index finger.

Halftap Reverse: the pen rotates in a clockwise motion (right-handed performance) for 0.5 rotation on top of the thumb and index finger.

Fingerless Halftap Normal: the pen moves in the same way as Halftap Normal, but with an initial push from the movement of the entire hand instead of a single finger.

Fingerless Halftap Reverse: the pen moves in the same way as Halftap Reverse, but with an initial push from the movement of the entire hand instead of a single finger.

Fulltap

Fulltap Normal: when a Halftap Normal is performed with more than 0.5 rotation, the trick is renamed "Fulltap Normal". The trick is performed the same as Halftap Normal, with more rotation on the thumb and index finger before the catch.

Fulltap Reverse: when a Halftap Reverse is performed with more than 0.5 rotation, the trick is renamed "Fulltap Reverse". The trick is performed the same as Halftap Reverse, with more rotation on the thumb and index finger before the catch.

Fake Reverse: Fulltap Reverse is also called by the historically used name: Fake Reverse.

Fingerless Fulltap Normal: the pen moves in the same way as Fulltap Normal, but with an initial push from the movement of the entire hand instead of a single finger.

Fingerless Fulltap Reverse: the pen moves in the same way as Fulltap Reverse, but with an initial push from the movement of the entire hand instead of a single finger.

Written naming convention

Halftap (Direction) (number of rotations) (starting position)-(ending position)

When writing a Halftap in breakdown form, the above convention will detail what happens throughout the entire trick.

  • The name of the trick, Halftap.
  • Direction can be omitted. When omitted, the trick is assumed to be a Halftap Normal.
  • The number of spins can be omitted. Halftap currently only has 0.5 rotation for the entire trick. For spins of 1.0 and above, the trick is renamed "Fulltap". When the number is omitted for Fulltap, it is assumed to only have 1.0 rotation total.
  • The starting and ending positions can be omitted.
    • Halftap and Fulltap are both assumed to start and end in the writing position.

Guide

Halftap Normal 0.5 T12-T12

  1. The pen is held in the writing position with pen resting on the side of the middle finger and the thumbflap.
  2. The index finger is bent while crossing over the thumb.
  3. The pen should spin for 0.5 rotation on top of the thumb and index finger.
  4. The pen is caught in the starting position.

Halftap Reverse 0.5 T12-T12

  1. The pen is held in the writing position with pen resting on the side of the middle finger and the thumbflap.
  2. The index finger is bend inward towards the base of the finger, the same push as a Thumbaround Reverse.
  3. The thumb is kept flat, underneath the pen so that the pen rotates above the thumb and index finger, instead of traveling around the thumb as a Thumbaround Reverse. The pen spins for 0.5 rotation.
  4. The pen is caught in the starting position.

Fulltap Normal 1.0 T12-T12

  1. The pen is held in the writing position with pen resting on the side of the middle finger and the thumbflap.
  2. The index finger is bent while crossing over the thumb. The index should deliver a stronger push than that of a Halftap Normal.
  3. The pen should spin for 1.0 rotation on top of the thumb and index finger. The index finger is kept bent until the pen completes the extra rotation.
  4. The pen is caught in the starting position.

Fulltap Reverse 1.0 T12-T12

  1. The pen is held in the writing position with pen resting on the side of the middle finger and the thumbflap.
  2. The index finger is bend inward towards the base of the finger, the same push as a Thumbaround Reverse. The index should deliver a stronger push than that of a Halftap Reverse.
  3. The thumb is kept flat, underneath the pen so that the pen rotates above the thumb and index finger, instead of traveling around the thumb as a Thumbaround Reverse. The pen spins for 1.0 rotation.
  4. The pen is caught in the starting position.

Halftap Reverse variation by Reyer Withrow

As reported on Pencil Spinning (Iluvitar) (source), the Halftap can be performed with a light Thumb Snap push. This will cause the pen to only rotate on top of the thumb and index finger, like a Halftap Reverse, with a thumb push instead of a finger push. With practice, more pressure can be used to perform Fulltaps Reverse with a different kind of push.
