Sonic

From UPSB

Jump to: navigation, search

Sonic is a fundamental. The pen travels from one finger slot to another with a Conic spin similar to that of Charge.

  • Normal: the pen rotates in a clockwise motion (right-handed performance) for 1.0 rotation throughout the entire trick.
  • Reverse: the pen rotates in a counter-clockwise motion (right-handed performance) for 1.0 rotation throughout the entire trick.

Written naming convention

Sonic (Direction) (1.0) (starting position)-(ending position)

When writing a Sonic in breakdown form, the above convention will detail what happens throughout the entire trick.

  1. The name of the trick, Sonic.
  2. The direction can be omitted. When direction is omitted, the trick is assumed to be a Sonic Normal.
  3. The number of spins can be omitted. Sonic only has 1.0 rotation total, so Sonic is always assumed to have 1.0 rotation.
  4. The starting and ending positions can be omitted.
    • When the positions are both omitted for a Sonic Normal, the trick is assumed to be a Sonic Normal 23-12.
    • When the positions are both omitted for a Sonic Reverse, the trick is assumed to be a Sonic Reverse 12-23.
    • If only the ending position is omitted for a Sonic Normal, the pen is assumed to only travel up one finger slot.
    • If only the ending position is omitted for a Sonic Reverse, the pen is assumed to only travel down one finger slot.

Guides

Sonic Normal 1.0 23-12 (thumbflap pressure)

The pen is held between the middle and ring finger near the center of the pen (the COP should be nearby). The back of the pen is held in the thumbflap. The middle finger is bent over the pen, pushing down on the pen between the ring finger and the thumbflap. The back of the pen is now being pushed into the thumbflap. The index finger should be positioned over the ring finger.

The thumb is moved back to release the pen. The pen rotates clockwise (right hand), the front of the pen should bounce off of the index finger at about 1/4 rotation. The middle finger is pulled in as to not block the pen's rotation. The pen should be between the index and ring fingers from about 1/4 to 3/4 rotation.

At about 3/4 rotation, the middle finger is straightened in prepareation for the catch.

As the pen finishes the full rotation, the index and middle fingers pinch the pen as the back falls into the thumbflap.

Sonic Normal 1.0 23-12 (no pressure)

The pen is held between the middle and ring finger near the center of the pen (the COP should be nearby).

The middle and ring fingers perform a clockwise Charge Normal motion to get the pen moving. At about 1/4 rotation, the pen should bounce off of the index finger.

The middle finger is bent in and out of the way as the index and ring fingers are brought closer together to hold the pen as it continues to rotate. The pen stays between the index and ring fingers from about 1/4 to 3/4 rotation. At about 3/4 rotation, the middle finger is straightened in prepareation for the catch.

As the pen finishes the full rotation, the index and middle fingers pinch the pen stop it.

Sonic Normal 1.0 12-23 (formerly Moonwalk Sonic)

  1. The pen is held between the index and middle fingers, the COP is on the inside of the fingers.
  2. The Charge - the trick begins with a half Charge rotation.
  3. The transfer - as the pen reaches a half Charge rotation, the middle finger is bent inward as the ring finger is brought together with the index. Another half Charge rotation is performed between the index and ring fingers.
  4. The catch - as the pen finishes the second half Charge rotation, the middle finger is extended out as the index finger moves away. The pen is caught in between the middle and ring fingers.

Tips

  • Keeping the pen held as loosely as possible will make it easier to allow the conic rotation to be smoothly performed throughout the entire trick.
  • Practicing Charge 13 and 24, along with Sonic Clip 34 and 23, will help to make the bent finger more flexible (middle finger in a Sonic Normal 12-23, ring finger in 23-34) .

iSonic

iSonic is a magic-inspired partial Sonic variation invented by Kam. For the iSonic, only half of a Sonic is performed. At the point where the pen would normally pass behind (or in front, for Inverse variations) a finger, the pen is caught and held behind the hand. The first and second fingers (index and ring fingers in the case of an iSonic 23) hold the pen behind them, hiding the pen behind the second finger (middle finger for iSonic 23).

Tipped Sonic moves along the hand in the same manner as all of the previous Sonic variations, but the conical spin is changed to a flat, sea-saw motion.

History

Sonic naming Sonic was first online by Hideaki Kondoh. The trick was also named "Three-Two Jump" by Patrick Szeto.

Former Sonic namings

  • Sonic 1.5+: all Sonics that include more than 1.0 rotation are now classified as Shadows, as stated in the Sonic and Shadow definitions article by the UCPSB Research Department.
  • Sonic 2x: is an outdated name for a Sonic Normal 34-12, or any Sonic that skips a single finger slot (Sonic 34-12, Sonic 23-T1).
  • Sonic 3x: is an outdated name for a Sonic Normal 34-T1, a Sonic that skips two finger slots.
  • Sonic Double is an outdated name for a Sonic Normal 2.0, now named Shadow Normal 2.0.
  • Sonic Double 3x is an outdated name for a Shadow Normal 2.0 34-T1
