Thumbaround

Thumbaround is a fundamental. The pen is pushed with a finger, causing the pen to travel around the Thumb before being caught between the Thumb and another finger.

  • Normal: the pen rotates around the Thumb in a counter-clockwise motion (right-handed performance) for 1.0 or more rotations throughout the entire trick.
  • Reverse: the pen rotates around the Thumb in a clockwise motion (right-handed performance) for 1.0 or more rotations throughout the entire trick.

Written naming convention

Thumbaround (Direction) (number of spins) (starting position)-(ending position)

When writing a Thumbaround in breakdown form, the above convention will detail what happens throughout the entire trick.

  • The name of the trick, Thumbaround, is written first.
  • The Direction can be omitted. When omitted, the trick is assumed to be a Thumbaround Normal.
  • The number of spins can be omitted. When omitted, the trick is assumed to only have 1 rotation around the Thumb.
  • The starting and ending positions can be omitted.
    • When the positions are both omitted for a Thumbaround Normal, it is assumed to be a Thumbaround Normal T2-T1.
    • When the positions are both omitted for a Thumbaround Reverse, it is assumed to be a Thumbaround Reverse T1-T2.
    • If the ending position is omitted for a Thumbaround Normal, it is assumed to end in the T1 slot.
    • If the ending position is omitted for a Thumbaround Reverse, it is assumed to end in the T2 slot.

Guides

Thumbaround Reverse T1-T2

  1. Holding the pen: The pen is held about 1/2 way between the COP and the end of the pen. The pen is held between the thumb and middle finger. The tip of the thumb is pressing down on the pen, which is sitting on the side of the middle finger.
  2. Index finger position: The index finger is curled, with the tip of the finger positioned on or just before the COP.
  3. The push: The index finger should curls even more. The tip is aimed towards the base knuckle. This will start moving the pen around the thumb.

Thumbaround Reverse notes

The COP needs to be far enough back so that the pens own weight can pull it around the thumb. If the COP is too close to the thumb in the beginning, the pen will have a hard time rotating around. If the COP is too far, the pen will fall off behind the thumb.

History

Trick naming

Before the UPSB Naming Committee decided on Thumbaround, the trick was known by quite a few names: 360 Degree Normal (Kam), Simple Thumb Spin (Patrick Szeto), Normal (Hideaki Kondoh), Forward Single (David Weis), Thumb Spin, 360 and Forward. Thumbspin was the most widely accepted name until the need to differentiate spinning around the thumb with spinning on top of the thumb.

Snaparound

Snaparound is a variation of the Thumbaround Normal that involves a snapping of the thumb and middle finger to push the pen. This push was invented by Israeli spinner, BlackGazza.

Fingerless Thumbaround

  • Normal: follows the same path as a Thumbaround Normal, with an initial push by hand movement instead of finger movement.
  • Reverse: follows the same path as a Thumbaround Reverse, with an initial push by hand movement instead of finger movement.

Guides

Fingerless Thumbaround Normal

  1. The pen is held in a similar fashion to the Thumbaround Normal. The pen is resting on the side of the index finger with the thumb held straight up opposite the index. The pen is pinched by the index and thumb closer to the end of the pen. The COP is located on the inside of the hand.
  2. A horizontal, circular movement of the hand is performed. The pen is pushed counter-clockwise (right hand) by the thumb as the entire hand moves. The thumb does not move relative to the hand; only the hand, as a single unit, moves in a circular path.
  3. The pen is caught in the same way as a Thumbaround Normal.

Fingerless Thumbaround Reverse

  1. The pen is held in a similar fashion to the Fingerless Thumbaround Normal. The pen is resting on the side of the index finger with the thumb held straight up opposite the index. The pen is pinched by the index and thumb closer to the end of the pen. The COP is instead located over the back of the hand.
  2. A horizontal, circular movement of the hand is performed. The pen is pushed clockwise (right hand) by the thumb as the entire hand moves. The thumb does not move relative to the hand; only the hand, as a single unit, moves in a circular path.
  3. The pen is caught in the same way as a Thumbaround Reverse.
