Thumbspin
From UPSB
The basic Thumbspin is performed with the same push and catch as those of Thumbaround. The difference is that the pen spins for 0.5 or more rotations on top of some part of the thumb between the push and catch. Thumspin can be the name of any trick involving the spinning of the pen on the thumb, it does not have to included the entire Thumbaround motion.
- Normal: the pen rotates around, and spins on top of, the thumb in a counter-clockwise direction (right-handed).
- Reverse: the pen rotates around, and spins on top of, the thumb in a clockwise direction (right-handed).

Written naming convention
Thumbspin (Direction) (1.5) (starting position)-(ending position)
When writing a Thumbspin in breakdown form, the above convention will detail what happens throughout the entire trick.
- The name of the trick, Thumbspin.
- The direction can be omitted. When direction is omitted, the trick is assumed to be a Thumbspin Normal.
- The number of spins can be omitted. When number of spins is omitted, it is assumed to have 1.5 rotations (1.0 for the Thumbaround motion + 0.5 spin on top of the thumb).
- The starting and ending positions can be omitted.
- When the positions are both omitted for a Thumbspin Normal, the trick is assumed to be a Thumbspin Normal T2-T1.
- When the positions are both omitted for a Thumbspin Reverse, the trick is assumed to be a Thumbspin Reverse T1-T2.

Sidespin (Thumbspin T2-T2)
This variation, invented by Tohlz, can be written as a Thumbspin 1.0 T2-T2. The pen only spins on the side of the thumb without going around it. It might also be looked at as a variation of the Fulltap T2-T2.

Inverse Thumbspin
The pen spins on top of the thumb, on the opposite side (palm-up) to that of the normal Thumbspin. This can be done in the normal (counter-clockwise for right handers) and reverse directions.
History
Trick naming
Thumbspin was once the prevalent name for Thumbaround, until the UPSB Naming Committee decided on different names between a trick that has the pen spinning around the thumb, instead of spinning on top of the thumb.
